"Boutique" has been stretched to cover everything from design hostels to tower blocks with lobby art. After 200+ inspected stays this year, here is our working definition — and how to spot the real thing.
Under 50 rooms, over 50 opinions
True boutique hotels are small enough that the owner still argues about the breakfast jam. Staff remember your name by day two, the playlist changes with the weather, and no two rooms are quite alike.
Elegance is restraint
The 2026 look is quiet: limewash walls, one perfect textile, local craft instead of imported marble. The loudest thing in the room should be the view. If the lobby needs sunglasses indoors, keep walking.
Three questions to ask before booking
Who runs the restaurant — and do locals eat there? What does the standard room actually face? And what happens at 1am when you need a doctor, a taxi, or just hot water? The answers separate character from marketing.
